Motorcycle helmet types
There are several different types of motorcycle helmets available, each with their own set of features and designed for specific types of riding.
Full-face helmets
These helmets cover the entire head and have a chin guard to protect the rider’s face in the event of an accident. They are considered the safest type of motorcycle helmet and are ideal for riders who engage in high-speed or sport riding.
Modular helmets
These helmets can be converted from a full-face to an open-face helmet by flipping up the chin guard. They are a popular choice for touring riders who want the protection of a full-face helmet but also want the ability to have an open face while stopped.
Open-face helmets
These helmets have an open chin and are also known as “three-quarters” helmets. They offer less protection than full-face helmets but more than half helmets. This type of helmet is great for riders who want a more traditional, classic look.
Half helmets
Also known as “shorty” helmets, these helmets cover the top of the head but do not have a chin guard. They offer the least amount of protection and are not recommended for high-speed or sport riding.
Dual-sport helmets
These helmets are designed for both on and off-road use and usually have a built-in visor and a chin guard. They are popular among riders who engage in adventure and dual-sport riding.
Off-Road Helmets
These helmets are designed for off-road riding and usually have a built-in visor, a protruding chin bar, and multiple air vents to keep the rider cool. They provide extra protection for the chin and jaw area and not intended for on-road use.
When choosing a helmet, it’s important to consider the type of riding you will be doing and select a helmet that is appropriate for that type of riding. In general, for sport and high-speed riding, a full-face helmet is the best choice. For touring, a modular helmet is a good option. If you’re into off-road riding, a dual-sport or off-road helmet is best. Finally, for riders who want a more classic, vintage look, an open-face helmet may be a good choice.
Beyond the type of helmet, when you choose a helmet, it is important to look for one that is properly certified. The four major certification bodies are DOT (Department of Transportation) and Snell Memorial Foundation and in the EU the former ECE 22.05 and now ECE 22.06, Look for one of these certifications. Additionally, a helmet should fit snugly and comfortably, and it should be worn correctly, which means that it should be fastened securely and the chinstrap should be snug. The helmet should also be comfortable and not restrictive, so that you can move your head easily while riding.
In general, a motorcycle helmet is one of the most important piece of equipment you can purchase, it can save your life in case of an accident.
